Spouse of Jan. 6 official who kicked the bucket after revolt feels obligation to address him at hearings

The widow of an official who passed on by self destruction only days after last year's revolt said Thursday she feels a sense of urgency to address him at the Jan. 6 panel hearings.

Erin Smith, who was hitched to Washington, D.C., Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, isn't booked to affirm as an observer, however she said she needs to be a voice for her late spouse.

"I think they need to understand what an official went through that is as of now not here with us," Smith told NBC News' Hallie Jackson. "They've heard from ones that are still here, and the ones who aren't have a story, too."

Smith said she will affirm before the House board of trustees at a future hearing, and her lawyer David P. Weber said there have been conversations with the board about her likely declaration. She is going to the advisory group's most memorable hearing on Thursday night.

Jeffrey Smith passed on by self destruction nine days after the Capitol assault. In March, his demise was found to have been in the line of obligation, with a board finding the wounds he supported that day were the "sole and direct reason" of his passing.

The beyond 24 hours have been personal for his widow. Wednesday night, one of the men Smith sued regarding her significant other's demise was captured by the FBI. David Walls-Kaufman, a Washington bone and joint specialist, has to deal with four offense penalties.
